How Do The Kardashians Make Money

Love them or hate them, the Kardashian family has transformed popular culture.

Many assume the clan gained overnight fame and fortune after the release of that infamous sex tape. But the Kardashians already had a place in Hollywood long before their reality show Keeping Up With The Kardashians premiered in 2007. And it all began with the family patriarch, the late Robert Kardashian Sr.

How did the Kardashians become rich?

Through their paid appearances, endorsement deals and respective businesses, the Kardashians have become a money-making machine. But even before KUWTK became a television juggernaut, the family lived a cushy life in Beverly Hills.

Kris Jenner and her four children Kourtney Kardashian , Kim Kardashian , Khloé Kardashian and Rob Kardashian had a comfortable upbringing provided by Robert, who was a prominent lawyer in town. The pair married in 1978 and hung out with the who's who of LA, counting famed NFL star O.J. Simpson and his wife Nicole Brown as close friends.

When the former star quarterback was accused of Brown's murder in 1994, Robert was part of the defence team that helped Simpson get acquitted. And it was through the highly-publicised trial the public was first introduced to the Kardashian name.

Kris and Robert divorced after 10 years of marriage. He would later die in 2003, aged 56, following a short battle with esophageal cancer.

The mum-of-four remarried former Olympic gold medallist Bruce Jenner in 1991, five months they met on a blind date. They soon welcomed daughters Kendall Jenner and Kylie Jenner .

In the early stages of their marriage, Kris — who was reportedly left with no money after her divorce from Robert — said they struggled to make ends meet and only had "$200 in the bank". But soon her business savvy kicked into gear and she thought to capitalise on his Olympic fame.

"When I met and married Bruce Jenner, I became his manager instantly because he didn't have a lot going on," Kris shared in 2017 on the Never Before with Janet Mock podcast. "I saw this incredible potential, and he wasn't doing anything. Nobody was booking him for speeches. Nobody was sending him out on the road. I thought, Wow. You should be this incredible public speaker. I just figured it out to that point.

"I told my assistant, Lisa, 'OK, listen. We have the greatest guy here. He really knows his craft. He is really good at what he does, but he doesn't have anybody doing anything for him. He doesn't have a lot going on. He has $200 in the bank. What are we going to do?' Because the kids have to eat. We have to get it together."

Kris, who admitted to hoarding whatever money they had, spent their last stash of cash to buy 7000 press kits, which she sent to speaking agencies across the US. Bruce soon became a high-in-demand motivational speaker and the bookings came rolling in — and so did the money.

The couple divorced in 2013 and two years later Bruce transitioned into Caitlyn Jenner , who is now worth a whopping $150 million. Kris not too far behind, sitting on a cool $135 million.

How did the Kardashians get a reality TV show?

Two words: Kris Jenner. The savvy star heard American TV personality and producer Ryan Seacrest was looking for a family for a new reality TV series similar to The Osbournes , and didn't hesitate to get in touch.

"Ryan Seacrest and I met 10 years ago when I pitched him our show and he happened to be searching for a family for a new reality series," she wrote in a 2017 tribute piece to Ryan for Variety . "I remember he sent someone over to our home to capture what goes on in a typical day at our family barbecue. I'm pretty sure after five minutes of stepping inside the house that he knew our family dynamic would keep people hooked for an entire season."

Ryan's instincts were spot on. Keeping Up With the Kardashians first aired in October 2007 and will come to an end in 2021, after 20 seasons.

Later in her memoir, Kris Jenner...And All Things Kardashian , the famous 'momager' admitted that every business move she made for her family was "calculated".

"I started to look at our careers like pieces on a chessboard," she wrote. "Every day, I woke up and walked into my office and asked myself, 'What move do you need to make today?' It was very calculated. My business decisions and strategies were very intentional, definite and planned to the nth degree."

How did Kim Kardashian get famous?

Kim Kardashian always knew she was destined for fame. In a resurfaced video of the star taken in the eighth grade, she stated her intentions from the get-go.

"Does everyone get a tape of this?" a young Kim said on camera. "I hope you do, so you can see me when I'm famous and remember me as this beautiful little girl."

By 2006, she was rubbing shoulders with the cool kids in town and called Paris Hilton her BFF. Kim was also employed by Paris at that point, hired to help organise the socialite's closet.

In 2007, another video of Kim's resurfaced — a sex tape she had made in 2002 with then-boyfriend Ray J was leaked online.

But in Hollywood, any publicity is good publicity. Kim's reality show KUWTK was due to premiere in 2007, too, and along with the now-infamous tape it pushed her further into the limelight.

How did Kim Kardashian get rich?

Kim Kardashian may have a privileged background, but she's always worked hard for her money. It was her father, Robert, who had instilled this work ethic in her since she was a teenager. Kim got her first job at 16, working in a clothing store in Calabasas, California and has had a job ever since.

"[My parents] never gave me money for rent or anything. Nothing. I always was working. I never asked people for money. That was never really my thing. I always just figured it out. The way that my parents taught me was, 'Hey, when you're 18, you've seen this lifestyle, I'm sure you're going to want to upkeep it. If you're going to want to live this way, you're going to have to get a job'," she once said.

When KUWTK first aired, Kim and her sisters had just opened a clothing store called DASH. They would soon shut up shop in 2018, after 12 years in business. But with their endorsement deals and countless companies bringing in the big bucks, the family could afford to let go of the boutique.

According to Forbes magazine, as of June 2020, Kim is estimated to be worth US$900 million (approx. $1.2 billion). It's mainly thanks to her beauty line, KKW, which raked in US$100 million (approx. $138 million) in 2019 alone.

Throw into the mix her husband Kanye West's net worth — which according to Forbes is US$1.3 billion (approx. $1.8 billion) — and Kim is doing pretty well.

How much do they get paid for Keeping Up With the Kardashians ?

It was reported back in 2017 that the family signed a mega TV deal worth US$150 million (approx. $207 million) to extend KUWTK for another five more seasons. That's US$30 million (approx. $41 million) per season.

According to The Blast , the family will split the monetary figure among themselves and it's up to momager Kris to decide who gets what cut.

"Everybody gets paid pretty much equally," Kris said on The Ellen DeGeneres Show in 2017.

"We all film a lot and we all work hard, and we've created this show and this brand for the last decade… Everybody's happy."
